Five principles towards a good user experience.
Guide : While users may have an idea of what they want to accomplish online, a strong experience will reveal new modes of interacting with brands and create new opportunities for users to engage. A site architecture ought bring users through the entire customer journey in an organic flow, adding value at every turn.
Simplify : Michelangelo said that he just chipped away all the pieces from a block of marble that weren't the statue. The same concept applies online – the best web sites can get rid of all extraneous elements to deliver a smooth and compelling experience. Removing the clutter gives the brand and the messaging more impact, and better enables users to take advantage of core functionality.
Connect : We extend our knowledge and feel our place in the world by drawing connections between new information and what we already know. Hierarchical models force users into silos that prohibit such connections. Better modes of human comprehension are now made possible through the rich correlations and interplay of data, information and people themselves. And by connecting people better to each other and the world, they will connect more deeply with the brand.
Release : Users want to control the information they find online. They are no longer content to visit a site to get the content, images, video and data they found there; rather, they want to be able to pull that information into their own sites, web pages, presentations and desktops. Sites need to offer users the tools to take that content, manipulate it as they desire and share it with others. Not only does this make users more loyal, but it becomes a source of viral marketing from a brand's best spokespeople: the enthusiasts.
Surprise : Above all, good experience needs to introduce the unexpected to the user. Serendipitous encounters lead to exploration and immersion. While a site may have needs to meet, business goals to achieve, and tasks to accomplish, they must incorporate the whimsical and new to draw in users.
